407. Revival Meeting with Pastor Chai
Every year, when KSC holds a revival meeting, I encourage our members to attend. It is because the guest speakers are often veterans of house church ministry, and we can glean so much from their insight and wisdom. This year, KSC has invited Pastor Chai as the guest speaker and I felt strongly that we should attend “all” the revival meetings, including the one on Sunday. So, we will be having a special joint service with KSC on 2/9. Even though the revival message will be in Korean, I want our congregation to hear his messages, as it likely is a rare chance to hear him in person. (Considering his schedule and age) I will provide translation (through a device), as I have done before.
Pastor Chai started the house church ministry (as we currently know and practice in our church) about 30 years ago, and established house church ministry international (HCMI) through which all house church pastors network and strengthen each other. But on a personal level, I feel very blessed to have listened to his lectures in person and got to receive personal coaching and guidance in proximity. Other than pastor Kwack, he is the pastor I want to emulate, as he has shown how a pastor can retire well and continue ministry well after retirement.
Many say that our church is healthy and vibrant, and the main reason is that we have tried to establish our church close to the way Pastor Chai established his. It is not because we are his fanatics, but he has built a church that resembles so much of the New Testament church we see in the Bible, where the church grew through conversion growth and genuine disciples were raised. I become grateful whenever I am reminded that I lead a happy ministry, thanks to the foundation laid by pastors like him. We are truly standing on the shoulders of giants who went before us.
Every so often, it is easy to think what we are harvesting is from our own sowing. But Jesus said we also reap the harvest of other people’s sowing. “I sent you to reap what you didn’t labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from their labor.” (John 4:38) I hope this revival meeting will give all of us a chance to appreciate the labour of his sowing, through which we get to enjoy the harvest of a healthy church.
